MTFG revises downward its group net balance projection

TOKYO, Japan - Tadahiko Fujino (L), senior managing director of the Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group (MTFG), and Tatsunori Imagawa, managing director of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, speak at a press conference in Tokyo on April 5. Yoshiro Mori

Born July 14, 1937 in Ishikawa Prefecture. A journalist-turned politician, Mori was Japan's 85th prime minister. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1969 at the age of 32. After 30 years rising through the ranks in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Mori became LDP president and prime minister April 5, 2000 following the sudden death of then Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi. Mori was forced to resign as prime minister on April 26, 2001 due to his unpopularity with the public.

Monument to tuna contaminated by H-bomb test

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken April 14, 2000 shows a stone "tuna monument" erected in the yard of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Exhibition Hall on Yumenoshima in Tokyo's Koto Ward and Matashichi Oishi, a former crew member of the Fukuryu Maru No. 5, a tuna fishing boat exposed to contamination by the 1954 U.S. hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll, who created the monument in 1999 as a reminder of the dreadful effects of the test and a symbol of peace.

Keizo Obuchi

Born on June 25, 1937 in Gunma Prefecture and deceased on May 14, 2000. Obuchi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1963 at age 26, succeeding to his father's seat while still a graduate student of Waseda University. Obuchi became prime minister on July 30, 1998 but relinquished the premiership on April 5, 2000 after suffering a massive stroke. He died on May 14 the same year.

Diet enacts pension-cutting bills

TOKYO, Japan - Members of the House of Representatives enact into law March 28 seven bills cutting the pensions of private-sector employees as part of reform of the pension system. The House of Councillors gave its approval last week. Pension payments to private-sector workers, decided according to salary earned while working, will be reduced in principle by 5 percent in fiscal 2000, which starts April 1.
